Track Tuesday: Rex the Dog – Musik Hypnotises (Original Mix)
Rex the Dog is Jake Williams and a dog named Rex. You may be familiar with Williams’ previous work as JX in the mid 90’s and early 00’s when he had success turning out chart-topping club anthems on labels like Hooj Choons. Now over a decade later it seems Jake has found a new companion as well as new inspiration inside the guts of his custom-built modular synth. Creating new music whilst limited by the albeit impressive sounds of a single piece of equipment could easily lead to something that was more novelty than substance, but Rex manages to give us something that is truly expressive and interesting in “You Are a Blade”, their latest 3-track release on Kompakt.
Our pick of the lot is definitely Musik Hypnotises, which builds a wonderful floor filling groove with driving bass and slowly building synth that takes us straight to acid territory. Add this to a set and see the ears perk up guaranteed.
The whole album is, as would be expected, a lesson in less-is-more, and Williams’ ability to tease a groove from his instrument is worth celebrating. Available on 12″ November 20th from Kompakt or digitally now on Beatport.
Here’s a great animated film with more about Rex the Dog:
